Technical Specifications:

It's probably easier and simpler to download our tech specs as a compressed pdf by clicking here.

Please keep in mid that we generally provide all our own back-line and PA for smaller venue performances. The specifications below will mainly apply to a small to large festival style situation, or large venues. It is intended as an overview only, and not as a substitute for a tailored spec sheet for any one gig.

Specifications are for a 4piece line up comprised of:

Jimmy Watts - vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, banjo, mandolin and harmonica

Paul Young/Gene Stevens - drums

Jono Duncan - bass (electric)

Mellissa Hender - Percussion (2x Congas, 1x Djembe & Blocks/Cowbells)

Please ask for a spec sheet that relates to the line up of you're show if line up is different to the one mentioned above.

Sound:

For relatively low volume shows we require 9 input channels:

  • 1 Vocal, clean, no effects in monitors

  • 1 Vocal, primarily harmonica, some effects (low distortion, reverb & flanger)

  • 1 Guitar, used for all acoustics & banjo & mandolin

  • 1 Electric Guitar

  • 1 Bass Guitar

  • 1 Kick Drum

  • 2x Conga's

  • 1x Djembe

For VERY loud shows where the whole drum kit needs to be mic’d, you will need to allow at least 5 additional channels.

Additional Channels for VERY LOUD shows:

    • 4 Drum kit

    • 1 Percussion

For regular shows we require 4 separate monitor channels with individual mixes, and 4 monitors.

For relatively low volume and small stage area shows we can make do with 2 separate monitor channels and 2 monitors. 1 monitor shared between Jono (Bass) and Jimmy (Vocals/Guitar), and 1 monitor as drum fill.

Jimmy requires:

  • 1st Vocal mic, SM58 preferred, channel to be left clean in monitors.

  • 2nd Vocal mic, bullet style harmonica mic preferred, but any instrument mic will work. Channel to be run with low level distortion, some reverb and flanger in monitors as well as FOH (Jimmy may bring his own harmonica amp and mic, in which case a line out amp goes into this channel. Two boom mic stands may still be required.)

  • 1st Guitar Channel, all acoustic guitars and banjo and mandolin run through this channel. They run through a Boss eq20 pedal into an acoustimax pedal, which will send relatively similar output levels to the desk straight to the desk/DI. Unless there is an engineer riding the monitor levels for the whole show, please keep the monitor eq’s relatively flat.

  • 2nd Guitar Channel, electric guitar, specifics will vary depending on whether using house amp or otherwise. If Jimmy is using his amp it will need to be mic'd up, and levels sent through monitors as requested.

  • At least 2x 240v power source, one near vocal mic for effects and one at rear of stage for amp.

  • 1 monitor minimum

For most shows Jimmy only requires himself (2x vocals and 2x guitar) in his fold-back. For louder situations he may require bass and kick drum in FB as well.

Jono (Bass) requires:

Electric (if not using his amp)

  • Amp with minimum 150w power, preferably 15”cone, but multiple 8/10/12” setups suffice. Line out, and built in compression and Graphic EQ preferable.

  • 1 Monitor Wedge

  • 1x240V power source

Paul/Gene (drums) requires:

- 1x 22" Bass drum

- 1x 14" (or 16") floor Tom

- 1x 10" (or 12") Rack Tom

- 1x Snare: Wooden (Preferably wooden rims), oak custom is preferable, but any Brady, high end Pearl or Yamaha suffices.

Cymbals: Preferably K Custom (dark series)

- Ride

- Crash (16")

- Crash (18")

- Splash (10")

- Hi Hats (14")

  • 1 Monitor Wedge preferably to left of kit, close to high hats

Note: Paul/Gene usually provides their own snare and cymbals. In which case, please ensure you have enough sturdy stands (cymbal and snare) and a drum stool. Also please ensure drum kit is tuned! It is always appreciated if you can email us specifics of the drum kit that will be on stage ahead of time. Please email info@jimmywattsband.com

Mellissa (Percussion) requires:

    • 2x Conga's (1x Quinto 1x Conga) on sturdy, height adjustable stands, preferably sandbagged. Also needs tuning wrench to match congas.

    • 1x Djembe (large guinean hard-shelled, goat skinned preferred) on sturdy sandbagged stand.

    • 1x monitor

Even if we're flying Mellissa will usually bring her own cowbells and other smaller percussive instruments.

Mixing:

If we are not providing our own sound engineer, please keep in mind that Jimmy is not a Diva with soaring vocals. Please keep the vocals in front of house to a low volume in the mix, with Jimmy's guitar being more prominent in the mix than usual.
